Description
Finger millet is a small-grained cereal grass in the Poaceae (grass) family, cultivated for its tiny, reddish-brown seeds. It is one of the most nutritious cereal grains in the world and a staple food for millions of people in South Asia and East Africa.
The name "finger millet" comes from the plant's seed head, which branches into several curved "fingers" resembling a hand. The grains are very small (1–2 mm in diameter), round, and range in color from deep reddish-brown to purple to white, depending on the variety.
The flavor is mild, slightly nutty, and earthy. When cooked, the grains become soft and porridge-like. Finger millet flour is widely used to make flatbreads, porridges, cakes, and beverages. The flour has a distinctive dark color and a slightly sweet, malty flavor.
Finger millet is exceptionally drought-tolerant and can grow in poor, dry soils where other cereal crops fail. It is also one of the most nutrient-dense grains, with higher calcium, fiber, and iron content than rice, wheat, or maize.
Origin & History
Finger millet is native to the highlands of East Africa (Ethiopia and Uganda), where it has been cultivated for over 5,000 years. It is one of the oldest cultivated grains in Africa.
The crop spread from East Africa to South Asia (India and Sri Lanka) several thousand years ago, where it became an important staple food, particularly in dryland farming regions. In India, ragi is a major crop in the southern states (Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh).
In Sri Lanka, finger millet (kurakkan) has been cultivated for centuries, particularly in the dry zone. It is one of the traditional "grain" crops of Sri Lankan agriculture, alongside rice and other millets. Kurakkan is deeply embedded in Sri Lankan food culture — kurakkan roti (finger millet flatbread) is one of the most traditional and beloved Sri Lankan foods.
Finger millet has been rediscovered in recent years as a "superfood" and "ancient grain" in Western markets, valued for its exceptional nutritional profile and gluten-free status.
